Avatar: The Last Airbender

Hayao Miyazaki filmsWe only have 'regular tv' in our house so I was late in discovering this show. A weekend visit to a friend's house, who watched the show and we were hooked. Since then, my 9 year old son and I download one episode a week from the Unbox Videos site at Amazon and watch it with my twin 9 year old nieces. My comments are based on the episodes I have seen so far.

Avatar: The Last Airbender (also known as Avatar: The Legend of Aang in several countries) is an Emmy award-winning American animated television series that aired for three seasons on the Nickelodeon television network and on Nicktoons Network. It was co-created and produced by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko.

As an artist, I partularly appreciate the design and artistic elements of the show. I also feel that the writing and storytelling is very good. The young characters in the show - both 'good' and 'bad' - are on journey's of self discovery. In each episode they learn to overcome fears, develop talents and discover that in life things are not always as they first appear.

The show is set in an Asian-influenced world of martial arts and elemental manipulation; the series follows the adventures of Aang and his friends, who try to save the world from war with the Fire Nation. The series begins with the discovery of Aang trapped in an iceberg by Katara and Sokka. After being freed from the iceberg, Katara and Sokka join Aang on a long journey across the globe, with the ultimate goal of helping Aang to acquire the skills he needs to defeat the Fire Lord and end the war.

Avatar: The Last Airbender mixes oriental martial arts, with bits of wisdom, wonder and comical situations and I think you'll become a fan if you watch it.

The episodes cost about $1.99 from Unbox Videos and can be saved on your computer or a portable video device (unfortunately you can't burn Unbox to DVD's). There are also some free episodes linked at the bottom of this page.
