Here are some common questions regarding the site, its content, purpose and usage.
1. Why doesn't your site look good in Joe Blow's Browser version 16.2?
You got me I have to admit I am not the Yoda of CSS and XHTML. I have tested the site in Internet Explorer and Firefox to make sure it is at least presentable but getting everything acceptable, in all browsers, and keeping up with constantly evolving standards is more than my wittle brain can handle. If something is horribly wrong please use the contact form to let me know and I'll see what I can do.
2. Can we use your textures in our Commercial game or to make textures to sell?
Sure. I don't want anyone reselling the textures as textures -hardly fair or ethical if I'm giving them away - but beyond that you may use them as layers to create your own new, unique textures or models to sell. You may also use them in your own games, multimedia presentations or as backgrounds on your webpage with no credit required - though it is appreciated. If you do use them, make lots of money and feel guilty you can always send me a bucket of money and then we'll both feel better. ;)
3. Can you create a free [texture, drawing, logo, web page etc] for me?
Probably not as I still fall into the starving artist category but, if work allows, I will sometimes trade services - for example I will sometimes write book and software reviews in exchange for a product I need. Having said that I do intend to create free content for the site in the form of tutorials and some graphical resources. If you want to request specific items I will add them to the idea list; if it is of general enough interest that others may find it useful when I sit down to create stuff I may just pick it. I'll also occasionally do items for a good cause - open source software, charitable organizations - but feeding my family comes first so this isn't always possible. No harm in asking as long as you can handle a polite 'no' in the likely event it isn't possible.
4. What's with the stores, you trying to get rich off me or something?
I previously owned a couple popular sites that evolved from my hobbies and I didn't consider money starting out. The problem was that they grew so big that they turned into my full time job for 5 years; that meant 40-50 hours a week maintaining the content and fixing stuff, writing articles, moderating forums, chasing down advertisers, hiring professional authors and footing large monthly bills for bandwidth. In short, I loved it.
The net bubble burst in 2000 and though one of the sites had 3 million monthly page views I couldn't make enough money to keep it afloat. I spent the next year bleeding money trying not to let it go. In the end I had to give it up. The result was that I decided that if I created another site I'd better think about the money aspects up front.
I've taken care to only add reputable stores with a track record (in the case of Amazon I've had affiliate stores with them since they first offered them in 1996) and any money we make will be divided between building the site, taking care of my family and supporting some charities we believe in.
